Located in the Houston area, Webster, Texas is a city of about 11,500 people.  The city is approximately 20 miles south of Houston on State Highway 3. It is 3 miles west of the Lyndon B. Johnson SpaceCenter in south Harris County.

When it was first established in 1879 by James W. Webster, Webster was known as Garden town. At that time, Webster ledEnglish settlers to the site – a site that was later served by the railroads, which enabled easier travel and access to the small community. The place also established a post office, known as Websterville, in 1882. Because of the area’s potential for flooding and its close proximity to Houston, the area, at first, experienced slow growth.

In 1890, “Websterville,” had 140 residents, several livestock dealers, gardeners who sold products, and a school. J. W. Thompson, who served as postmaster of Websterville, founded the Webster post office and a grocery in 1893. People who settled in the area from the Midwest grew pears and another citizen raised okra. When the area first published its local newspaper, the Webster Star, the town featured a hotel, 2 general stores, and 3 churches, and had grown to 225 people.

While Webster became incorporated in 1958, it did not have any more than 5 businesses until the building of the area’s space center in 1961. By 1962, the town had completed a civic center building and hospital, and had annexed 330 additional acres in south Harris County. By 1976, Webster’s population grew to 3,250 people and the small city was home to 47 businesses. After that, the population fluctuated – going up and down frequently during the late 1970s and 1980s.
