According to recent statistics, Fulshear, with its easy access to the Westpark Tollway and Interstate 10, has been ranked as the fastest expanding city in Texas. The city’s roots are tied to both the Churchill Fulshear plantation and settlers who received land grants in Stephen F. Austin’s colony, known as the Old Three Hundred.
The small rural site centered its activities around the Fulshear Plantation’s flour mill and cotton gin until 1888. At that time, the plantation owner, Churchill Fulshear, Jr. gave the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway a right-of-way through his land.
In 1898, Fulshear had a population of 250 people and featured 3 saloons, a hotel, a school and 11 stores. Fulshear has always attracted activity, as residents, in 1912, reportedly complained that the place was so busy when people got paid that they could not walk on the crowded sidewalks.
However, things did settle down for a while, in 1933, when the Fulshear plantation house was demolished. The population remained at around 250 until the metro area spanned out in the late 1970s.
