Located in Brazoria County, and part of the Houston Area, Alvin, Texas boasts approximately 25,000 residents. The family-friendly community once was home to professional baseball Hall-of-Fame pitcher, Nolan Ryan, who grew up in Alvin. The professional baseball star relocated to Round Rock, Texas in 2003.

Alvin is also home to the Nolan Ryan Museum in Alvin Community College. The MLB pitcher, who played for the Texas Rangers before retiring, recorded 5,714 strikeouts during his 27-year career. Alvin was once called Morgan to honor the first resident, Alvin Morgan, an employee of the Santa Fe Railroad. The railroad contributed to the city’s growth in the mid-1800s as well as area bull ranches. When locals discovered that “Morgan” was used by another town, they called the city Alvin, after the original resident’s first name. The town became incorporated in 1893.

The community is also the site of the Bayou Wildlife Zoo, an open-range menagerie that makes you feel like you’ve just gone on safari. Alvin residents can see a variety of animals in natural habitat settings.
